Weightlifter Canaveral banned for eight years
Weightlifter, Adrian Canaveral, has been suspended from all sport for a period of eight years following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).
On 19 September 2018, UKAD Doping Control Officers attempted to collect a sample from Mr Canaveral (who was at the time serving a ban following an ADRV), to which he refused, citing his retirement from weightlifting. Neither UKAD nor British Weightlifting had been notified of his intention to retire from sport.
Mr Canaveral was charged with an ADRV pursuant to Article 2.3 of the Anti-Doping Rules – “Evading, Refusing or Failing to Submit to Sample Collection”.
Mr Canaveral had previously been issued with a four-year ban, starting on 9 October 2016, after testing positive for multiple prohibited substances and was still serving the ban at the time of refusal.
UKAD’s Chief Executive, Nicole Sapstead, said: “Any athlete who receives a ban from sport is still subject to testing during their ban. If an athlete decides to retire from sport during this time, it is their responsibility to notify UKAD and their National Governing Body.”
The period of ineligibility shall apply from 9 October 2020 until midnight on 8 October 2028.
