UKAD report shows increased athlete testing prior to Paris 2024

During the first financial quarter of the year (April - June), UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) conducted over 2,400 tests, an increase from the previous year, with the Olympic and Paralympic sports of athletics, cycling and swimming amongst UKAD’s most tested sports.

UKAD’s latest quarterly testing report released today confirms that 2,449 anti-doping tests were conducted between 1 April and 30 June 2024. By comparison, UKAD conducted 2,081 tests during the same period in 2023 and 2,350 in the previous quarter (January - March 2024). The increase can be attributed to UKAD’s continued testing of Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes prior to Paris 2024.

Hamish Coffey, Director of Operations at UKAD said:

“The Olympics has been a joy to watch and we’re delighted to now be turning on our screens to watch the Paralympics, giving us yet another chance to enjoy exceptional sporting events and to see the results of every athlete’s hard work and commitment. Athletes spend years preparing for these moments and anti-doping plays a key part in their preparations. The first quarter of our financial year focused on testing those athletes in what is a high-risk window.

“A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to plan the testing programme, working with UKAD’s experienced team of Doping Control Personnel. Alongside education and enforcement, testing ensures athletes can head into a Major Games knowing they have played their part in a comprehensive anti-doping programme and are set to represent their country with pride.”

UKAD’s Testing Programme is intelligence-led and risk-based, targeting areas with the greatest risk to clean sport. UKAD tests across more than 50 sports, including Olympic and Paralympic sports, as well as professional and team sports; many of which are unique in their doping risks.
