2025 Prohibited List: Summary of Changes

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has recently released the 2025 Prohibited List (the List), which details the substances and methods that are banned within sport. Broken down into several categories, the List identifies which substances and methods are prohibited at all times, in-competition only, and within specific sports.

Following an extensive consultation period by WADA, the 2025 List was published on 25 September 2024. This gives athletes and support personnel sufficient time to make themselves aware of the changes, review any medications they use, and apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) if required before the updated List comes into effect on 1 January 2025.

The below sections summarise the major changes to the List for 2025. Please consult the 2025 Summary of Major Modifications and Explanatory Notes for the full list of modifications.

Inhaled formoterol

The maximum allowed use of inhaled formoterol will be modified in 2025. The total permitted daily dose (54 micrograms over 24 hours) remains unchanged, but athletes will only be able to therapeutically inhale up to 36 micrograms of formoterol over any 12-hour period. A TUE will be required to cover therapeutic use that exceeds these permitted limits.

Removal of apheresis as a prohibited method

The donation of blood or other blood components by all types of apheresis will no longer be prohibited when performed in an accredited collection centre. View the list of accredited Therapeutic Apheresis Units in the UK.

Guanfacine

Guanfacine has been clarified to be a permitted substance within Section 6 Stimulants.

Beta-blockers

Beta-blockers will no longer be prohibited in any ski or snowboard discipline.

Additional examples

Several new examples of prohibited substances have been added to various categories of the List. Please note that these are not new substances being added to the 2025 List for the first time but are additional examples of substances that are already prohibited.
